JCS4 The Jewish People and the Church: The Gospel

This course delves into the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the message of the Gospel, examining how each of these elements contributes to the overarching narrative of salvation in the Christian faith. Students will explore the foundational role of Israel in the biblical story, the emergence of the Church as the body of Christ, and how the Gospel message of redemption is conveyed through these two communities. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the unique and shared aspects of Israel’s and the Church’s missions, promises, and identities as they relate to God’s plan of salvation.

Key theological themes include covenant, fulfillment, the Kingdom of God, and the eschatological hope shared by Israel and the Church. Students will study various New Testament interpretations of Israel’s role, discuss theological perspectives on the continuity and distinctions between Israel and the Church, and examine how the Gospel message intersects with Jewish-Christian relations today.

Through critical readings, discussions, and theological reflection, this course aims to deepen students’ understanding of how the relationship between Israel and the Church enriches the Gospel message.
