This course examines the theological, historical, and political dimensions of the relationship between Israel, the Church, and the land of Israel, with a particular focus on how these elements influence modern Christian thought and political perspectives. Students will explore biblical understandings of the land promised to Israel, how this concept has developed in Jewish and Christian traditions, and its implications for contemporary political issues surrounding Israel and Palestine.
Topics include the significance of the land in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, theological interpretations of the “Promised Land,” the evolution of Christian Zionism, and varying Christian perspectives on land, territory, and nationhood. The course will also address complex questions such as: How should Christians interpret the promises of land to Israel? What role does the land of Israel play in the Church’s theology and mission? How do these beliefs influence political stances, activism, and interfaith relations?
Through critical readings, case studies, and discussions, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the role of the land in biblical theology and in shaping Christian responses to current geopolitical issues in Israel and Palestine.
